(AP) YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar’s military government is forcing cyclone victims out of shelters and refugee camps and sending some back to their devastated villages with virtually no aid supplies, United Nations and church officials said Friday.

Eight camps set up by the government for homeless victims in the Irrawaddy delta town of Bogalay are “totally empty,” UNICEF official Teh Tai Ring told a meeting of aid groups.

“The government is moving people unannounced,” he said, adding that authorities were “dumping people in the approximate location of the villages, basically with nothing.”

We are afraid of getting dengue fever.”

One relief group reported finding elderly and child survivors of the cyclone dying from dysentery in some areas because many have no choice but to drink dirty water. Other groups have detected a number of ailments including pneumonia, malaria, and cholera.

Save the Children UK has warned that some 30,000 children in the delta were severely malnourished before Cyclone Nargis struck, with thousands facing starvation in the next two or three weeks. The monsoon season, which begins next month, adds yet another challenge.

We are in contact with Christians ministering to disaster victims in Myanmar. Here is the latest news from one of our partners:

“All of the orphanages have sustained great damage but thankfully no injuries or loss of life. They have lost most of the outbuildings such as kitchen buildings, chicken coops (along with the chickens), rice barns (and the rice stored), etc. One orphanage lost many of their large beautiful fruit trees that provided fruit for all of the orphanages and were a means of making some extra income because they could sell the fruit that they couldn’t eat. The primary need for the orphanages right now is food. The price of all commodities has risen by four times in the past week. Eggs, one of their chief sources of protein, went from about 10 cents each to about 70 cents each.”

Our partners are meeting physical needs and are meeting spiritual needs, as well. Most people come to Christ in the midst of a crisis, it is one of the ways that hearts are softened to receive the gospel.

Please pray for the safety, health and protection of all affected by this tragedy. Pray for a generous response from people all around the world to come alongside the people of Myanmar in their time of need.

We are partnering with Christians who are offering hope and Good News to those devastated by the cyclone. Here is the latest:

“One of the evangelists who ministers in the prisons lost her home. In other areas, the “squatters” (those who put up bamboo shacks) have lost everything. In one of these areas, several EvanTell trained missionaries started a house church and children’s ministry. They have around 50 children from Buddhist backgrounds who come twice a week for Bible studies and they are learning many Bible verses and songs. After two years of ministering to the children, their parents have recently begun to come also on Sundays. This area was completely destroyed and these already destitute people now have nothing at all.”

EvanTell’s mission is to declare the gospel clearly and simple, activate believers around the world, and prepare the next generation to reach the lost. Long after the international relief agencies are gone, these indigenous brothers and sisters in Christ will still be there to continue ministering to the victims, to share the gospel and to connect the storm victims with local Bible believing churches.

Please pray for opportunities for our network of trained believers to share Christ with those that don’t know Him.

We continue to receive updates from our indigenous ministry partners in Myanmar about God’s faithfulness in the midst of crisis:

“Many have lost all their homes. No power, so there is no water. I heard it will take two months. We are glad that we can have candle light but we need to buy water every day and it is so high. As you know things are so high - four times higher than before and we are not sure how long we can take it. Some of our friends were so terrify by cyclone and beg us to talk to our Living Father. I believe that in everything our Father has a purpose for us and that He is always faithful to us. Thank you so much for your deep love and concern.”

Please continue praying for our partners on the ground in Myanmar, the victims of the storm, and the relief efforts. Cyclone Nargis, has caused incredible destruction right in the area of much of EvanTell’s ministry efforts. We have trained and certified 67 You Can Tell It evangelism instructors and have trained more than 16,000 indigenous brothers and sisters in Christ in sharing the gospel throughout the storm-ravaged area.
